Jack LaLanne at 71 years old. Amazing.

A powerful voice and role model in the fitness world passed away in his California home yesterday. Jack Lalanne was a very important figure in getting America serious about health and exercise, even before the most recent fitness craze hit. According to his daughter, he was 96 years old and still going strong, exercising 2 hours a day and changing his routine every 30 days. If you’ve ever been up late at night watching television, you may have seen him advertising his juicer and all its amazing benefits. You can read more about Jack LaLanne’s story here.

What may be the MOST important about Jack LaLanne is that his entire life was spent stressing the importance of getting up and moving. He experienced and believed in the power of exercise and how it will change your life. It certainly changed him from a self-professed “sugar-holic” at 14 years old, to a fitness fanatic at 15. And from that point forward, he wanted that same experience for everyone else. LaLanne had his own television show, opened the first modern health club in California in 1936, designed his own exercise equipment without a patent, and loved to inform folks about his amazing juicer (www.powerjuicer.com). To say the least, he will be missed.

One of my favorite quotes from Jack LaLanne completely embalms everything I believe about why I exercise:

“I do it as a therapy. I do it as something to keep me alive. We all need a little discipline. Exercise is my discipline.”

I certainly hope he is now resting in peace. His influence was great and for folks like me, committed to helping those around me get healthy, his influence is greatly appreciated.
