New Beginnings: Switching to a Plant-Based Diet

Happy 2013, everyone!

I didn’t dive right into writing posts about resolutions, goals, challenges and making 2013 “the best year” right away. Simply because, as of a few years ago, I don’t really believe in resolutions. I believe in setting goals and following through with a plan to achieve them, whatever time of year. Not just in January. Most resolutions I always hear are so lofty and often unrealistic. It pushes me further away from making them and just sticking with my own meaning of doing things with no fear, doing the best I can in everything I do, and living every day to the fullest. Inspiration: “I Love Myself More Than I Hate The Exercise.”

I love myself more than I hate the exercise.

This was said today in a conversation I was having with a young lady named Alexis. She has a very inspiring story that would encourage almost anyone to get off their butt and get moving. You see, Alexis used to weight well over 300 pounds. She’s 28 years old and has struggled with her weight for most of her life. About a year ago, Alexis joined the Y (where I work) so that she could start the journey to losing weight and getting healthy. Everyday, she comes in to train with a personal trainer, take a class, swim, walk the track or just do her own workout. She has made significant progress and even ran (and walked a little) the Hot Chocolate 5K this past November. Continue reading →

I was invited down to the University of Illinois in Champaign (I’m an alumni of this very awesome university!) for a wonderful natural hair conference called “SuperNatural Tender, Love and Hair”. The conference was put on by a great student organization (SuperNatural) that is focused on bringing resources, information and fun on campus about natural hair health. Yep, you read that right. I, Renisha, the personal trainer and health fanatic, am a sugar junkie. I decided to write this post to be sure all my readers get a more personal side of me. I certainly don’t want to come off as this perfect, unblemished and unaffected trainer that can’t relate to what you all are going/have gone through, only offering information and not sharing the real me. Jack LaLanne: The Fitness World Will Miss You

A powerful voice and role model in the fitness world passed away in his California home yesterday. Jack Lalanne was a very important figure in getting America serious about health and exercise, even before the most recent fitness craze hit. According to his daughter, he was 96 years old and still going strong, exercising 2 hours a day and changing his routine every 30 days.
