Monday Motivation: Ledisi – Shut Up

The title sounds kinda harsh, right? But this song is speaking to me in so many ways. I’ve been on a Ledisi kick for the past few days because of the release of her new album and the fact that I got to go see her perform at a very intimate concert this past Friday. (Very special thanks to Afrobella for the opportunity. Check out the write up for the concert experience on her blog very soon.) I sat front row and got to listen to her tell us the story of how “Ledisi” came to be the woman who was sitting before us. She’s gorgeous and talented and her voice makes my soul so happy. If you aren’t familiar with her or her work, definitely check her out at ledisi.com and on Twitter (@ledisi). Continue reading →

Monday Motivation: Paul Simon – Call Me Al

Paul Simon has got to be one of my most favorite artists from my childhood. My mother introduced Paul Simon’s “Graceland” album to my siblings and I a couple of years after it came out (1986). I remember her being so excited because he’d done a few songs with one of her favorite South African acapella groups Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The memories I have of this particular song are full of joy and dancing and laughing and happy times. I know it sounds so cheesy, right? But the song itself is just awesome. And Paul Simon is a phenomenal artist with decades worth of amazing and unforgettable music. I love watching this video and watching the crowd dance and go wild. There are certain songs you hear throughout life that you’ll never forget. For me, this is one of them. Continue reading →

Monday Motivation – Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough

Michael Jackson.

Enough said.

No really, anything by Michael Jackson is enough to put your mood in place where negativity, doubt, and fear can’t touch it. That’s the power of music. If you allow it, it can certainly change the atmosphere and bring you into a place of peace. I believe Michael really understood this and used this knowledge to OUR advantage. Continue reading →

Monday Motivation – Raphael Saadiq: Love That Girl

“Love That Girl” is definitely on my playlist of “songs that make my mood better”. It is, no doubt, one of the best songs on Raphael’s The Way I See It album. It seems as though Raphael Saadiq took a 60′s, old school R & B style with these songs and he most definitely succeeded in a achieving feel-good, down-home, let’s-just-have-a-good-time kind of vibe. I chose this song for this week also because Raphael Saadiq was one of the acts during this year’s Lollapalooza weekend, here in Chicago. Unfortunately I missed him perform, but from what I heard, he was phenomenal! ( I wouldn’t doubt it…) Continue reading →
